There's nothing quite like the joy of receiving a stunning bouquet of fresh flowers. With the right care, your blooms can stay vibrant and fragrant for up to two weeks. Our expert florists share their insider tips to help you enjoy your flowers at their absolute best.
Start with a Clean Vase
Before you arrange your fresh flowers, wash your vase thoroughly with hot, soapy water. Bacteria is the enemy of fresh flowers, and even residue from previous bouquets can dramatically shorten their lifespan. A sparkling clean vase creates the perfect foundation for long-lasting blooms.
Trim the Stems Properly
This is the single most important step for flower longevity. Using sharp, clean scissors or secateurs, cut stems at a 45-degree angle, removing at least 2-3 centimetres from the bottom. This angled cut increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents stems from sitting flat against the vase bottom. Always trim stems under running water or immediately place them in water to prevent air bubbles forming in the stem, which blocks water uptake.
Remove Foliage Below the Water Line
Strip away any leaves that would sit below the water level in your vase. Submerged foliage quickly decays, creating bacteria that clogs stems and clouds the water. Your flowers will drink more efficiently and your water will stay fresher for longer.
Use Fresh, Cool Water
Fill your vase with fresh, cool (not cold) water. Different flowers have different preferences, but most of our Victorian-grown blooms thrive in cool water. If your bouquet came with flower food, add it according to the packet instructions—it contains nutrients and antibacterial agents that genuinely extend flower life.
Find the Perfect Spot
Place your arrangement away from direct sunlight, heating vents, ceiling fans, and fruit bowls. Heat accelerates aging, while ethylene gas from ripening fruit causes flowers to wilt prematurely. A cool spot with indirect light keeps blooms looking fresh and vibrant.
Change the Water Regularly
Refresh the water every two days, or daily in warm weather. Each time you change the water, give the vase another quick clean, re-trim the stems by about one centimetre, and remove any wilting blooms. This routine maintenance makes an enormous difference to how long your flowers last.
Special Care for Different Flower Types
Roses benefit from a deeper vase that supports their stems. Remove guard petals (the outer petals that may look bruised) to reveal the perfect bloom underneath.
Tulips continue growing in the vase and turn towards light. Rotate your arrangement daily for even growth and re-cut stems as they extend.
Natives like waratahs and kangaroo paw prefer their water changed less frequently, as they're adapted to our unique Australian conditions.
Soft-stemmed flowers such as gerberas benefit from shallow water—just 5-7 centimetres is ideal.
Emergency Revival Techniques
If your flowers are looking droopy, try this florist's trick: re-cut the stems, wrap the bouquet firmly in paper, and place in deep, cool water for several hours. Many blooms will perk up beautifully.
When to Say Goodbye
Remove individual flowers as they fade to keep the arrangement looking fresh and prevent bacteria spreading to healthy blooms. With proper care, you can enjoy your bouquet for 7-14 days, depending on the variety.
